Industrial Pollution

In Northern Ireland, a new system of air pollution control from industrial sources was introduced in 1998.

Under the new regime, specific types of industry prescribed by legislation are required to be authorised.

The Authorisation is in effect a licence allowing the holder to operate a process subject to certain conditions.

The purpose of the system is to control, limit or prevent the emission of certain prescribed substances and other products from those processes.

 Industrial Pollution Control

Local authorities are responsible for the following 12 categories of process:

(1) Combustion Processes

(2) Iron and Steel

(3) Non-ferrous Metal

(4) Cement and Lime Manufacture

(5) Other Mineral Processes

(6) Ceramic Products

( 7) Incineration

( 8) Coating and Printing

(9) The Manufacture of Dyestuffs, Printing Ink and Coating Materials

(10) Timber Processes

(11) Processes involving Rubber

(12) The Treatment and Processing of Animal or Vegetable Matter.
